The Intangible cultural Heritage describes living traditions and practices passed on over generations, which give a community a feeling of identity and continuity.
The Intangible Cultural Heritage belongs, for example, music, dance, customs, celebrations or traditional craft techniques. The Intangible Cultural Heritage is extremely diverse, and in contrast to Tangible Cultural Heritage (e.g. the Old city of Bern, UNESCO World Heritage) it changes constantly.
The “list of living traditions in Switzerland” forms the basis and conditions for the nomination of living traditions for the List of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage . Up to now (November 2022), seven living traditions from Switzerland have been accepted into the intangible Cultural Heritage List such as the Holy Week Processions in Mendrisio.
