Legal documents and administrative records of the former Abbey of St. Gall are displayed in the exhibition hall.
These documents show that an abbey like St. Gall was not only an important spiritual and cultural centre, but also an equally important economic centre. The 750 or so private documents and 100 rulers' diplomas from the early Middle Ages are particularly valuable. These sources make the Lake Constance region the best documented region in Europe in the early Middle Ages. The famous St. Gall monastery plan, the oldest building plan of a monastery in Europe, is displayed in a separate room. The pupils explore this plan with the help of a copy and find out everything that goes into a large monastery.
